Cliff Spinks: Langleybury and Hertfordshire

Cliff Spinks’s Langleybury years, notable club aggregates and county record, drawn from the club tribute and Hertfordshire’s official obituary.

Clifford Nigel “Cliff” Spinks played for Langleybury from the late 1980s until 2004, according to the club tribute reported by the Watford Observer. The published records show the scale of his all-round contribution: large batting totals, wicket-taking seasons and fielding entries. The club tribute reported in November 2025.

A substantial club record

The first-XI sheets include 119 wickets in 1990 and 1,391 runs in 1992. They also list 26 catches in 1990. These are separate categories: the runs are a season batting aggregate, the wickets a season bowling aggregate, and the catches a fielding record. Batting and bowling aggregates; Fielding sheet.

The second-XI batting table credits C. Spinks with 174 not out against Gerrards Cross in 1999. It is important to retain the team context rather than simply describing every entry as a first-XI achievement. Second-XI batting records.

Year Published Langleybury entry
1990 First XI: 119 wickets
1990 First XI: 26 catches
1992 First XI: 1,391 runs
1999 Second XI: 174 not out v Gerrards Cross

Hertfordshire cricket

Hertfordshire Cricket’s official obituary says Spinks represented Herts Young Cricketers in 1981. It records 23 county Championship matches between 1995 and 2000, in which he scored 835 runs and took 43 wickets. Hertfordshire’s official obituary.

The county tribute also describes his 1996 county cap, following a last-ball six that won a 55-over Trophy first-round match against Wiltshire. That account is attributed to the county; the original match scorecard has not been independently examined for this archive.

County totals and Langleybury totals describe different bodies of matches. They should not be added together or treated as competing versions of the same career figures.

Remembering Spinks

The club tribute records his death on 6 November 2025, aged 62, and recalls him as “Spinksy”. The newspaper page was published on 12 November; the publication date is not the date of his death. Watford Observer tribute.

The available record supports a profile of a cricketer who contributed with bat, ball and in the field across club and county cricket. It does not yet supply a complete season-by-season Langleybury biography. The wider records selection places his achievements alongside those of other XIs and generations.
