Hertfordshire champions in 1998
Langleybury’s 1998 Hertfordshire Cricket League title, the evidence that confirms it, and Paul O’Reilly’s ten-wicket performance in that season.
Langleybury were Hertfordshire Cricket League champions in 1998. The Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians lists the club for that year, between Radlett’s 1997 title and Hemel Hempstead Town’s 1999 championship. The club’s archived official history and an opposing club’s report reinforce the same achievement. ACS league winners list; archived club history.
The title came two years after the 1996 National Village final. The distinction matters: the Lord’s appearance was a knockout cup final, whereas the 1998 honour was a league championship.
Evidence from the following season
Reed’s archived report of a 1999 cup match describes Langleybury as the reigning Hertfordshire champions. Reed made 156 and recorded a four-run win. The report was uploaded to Reed’s website in 2007, but is filed as a 1999 match report; the website upload year is not the match year. Reed’s match report.
This provides a useful independent check on the title. The same account makes a casual reference to the time since Langleybury’s Lord’s appearance that does not agree with the verified 1996 date. A source can support the championship while still containing a mistaken aside.
O’Reilly takes all ten
On 25 July 1998, Paul O’Reilly took all ten wickets against Knebworth Park. The club’s published first-XI records give his figures as 10/43, while a contemporary newspaper profile and the season’s fixture archive support the date and opponents. Club bowling records; The Independent profile; 1998 league fixtures.
Exactly a year later he took 10/38 for Hertfordshire against Staffordshire. That county feat is separate from the Langleybury performance. O’Reilly’s profile sets the two events alongside each other.
The club’s records also place P. Reynolds’s 202 not out against Tottenhoe in 1998. It is a first-XI batting entry; the record sheet alone should not be used to assert that the innings counted towards the league championship. Club individual batting records.
What the championship record still lacks
The final league table, points total, full season results and championship captain have not been recovered for this archive. Those details are therefore absent rather than reconstructed from adjacent seasons. A contemporary league handbook, club annual report or presentation programme could establish them.
The title itself is securely supported. Its importance does not depend on filling the gaps with assumed players, totals or a dramatic account of a final-day result that has not been documented.
