Shahzad Malik’s 403 for Langleybury
What is established about Shahzad Malik’s 403 against Middlesex Tamils in 2005, the 515 partnership and 563/2 total, and which details remain disputed.
In 2005, Shahzad Malik scored 403 for Langleybury against Middlesex Tamils at Hunton Bridge in the Bertie Joel Cup. The innings appears in specialist statistical records, a Club Cricket Conference account and the club’s own tables. It is one of the most striking performances in the surviving Langleybury archive. The established figures
| Detail | Supported record |
|---|---|
| Batter | Shahzad Malik, recorded as S. Malik in the club table |
| Year | 2005 |
| Opponents | Middlesex Tamils |
| Venue | Hunton Bridge |
| Competition | Bertie Joel Cup |
| Individual score | 403, without a not-out designation |
| Langleybury total | 563/2 in 45 overs |
| Second-wicket partnership | 515, P. Kerr and S. Malik |
The club’s batting sheet records the partnership, while its team-total sheet and the Club Cricket Conference support 563/2. The figures show that Malik’s innings was part of a very large team score, rather than a separate exhibition unrelated to a recorded match. Why the article uses the year alone
The available sources do not agree on the exact day. A CricketArchive event index places the match on 24 June 2005, while a forum reproduction of a contemporary report appears to place it in July. The original scorebook or newspaper report has not been recovered to settle that difference. This archive therefore uses 2005 in the headline and main narrative. Competition index; reproduced report, used as a research lead.
The number of sixes is also unsettled: the Conference account gives 37, while the reproduced report gives 38. A claim of 137 balls survives in that reproduction, but has not been independently confirmed against a scorecard. Those details are identified here as disputed or unverified, rather than promoted into the headline.
403 is not 403 not out
The specialist table lists 403 without the not-out asterisk. That distinction is preserved. The club’s 563/2 team total does not, by itself, tell us that Malik was one of the unbeaten batters at the close.
Nor does this archive describe the innings as a world record. Establishing a world record would require a clearly defined format and complete comparison set. The supported achievement is substantial on its own: a 403-run innings, a 515-run partnership and a team total of 563/2.
Where to explore further
The club’s older photo archive includes an album associated with the 403 innings. Photographs may help identify people and the occasion, but an upload date cannot settle the match date.
