Photographs, scorebooks and archive collections
Where Langleybury’s historical photographs and records can be found, how their dates should be read, and what is needed for responsible reuse.
Langleybury’s history survives across club websites, collectors’ scans, opposition archives, newspapers and public records. A useful archive needs to identify what each item is, when it was made and what it can establish.
Collections to explore
| Collection | Material identified | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1988 testimonial programme | 19 linked scans, including history, portraits, photographs and advertisements | Separate planned events from completed results |
| Club Pitchero photo archive | Presentation evenings, President’s Day collections and a Malik 403 album | Read album titles and captions; upload dates may be much later |
| Current club records | Sixteen image sheets with records and awards through 2025 | Retain team, category and not-out distinctions |
| Leverstock Green galleries | A 2008 Gazette Cup final collection | Opposition captions can establish results and context |
| BBC Going Places listing | A 1975 programme about the Isleham tie | Listing verified; footage not reviewed here |
| Hunton Bridge conservation appraisal | Historic maps, an aerial view and local setting | Examine maps before claiming a marked cricket ground |
Event dates and upload dates
The club’s 2001 presentation-evening album contains 53 photographs, uploaded by Roy Newman on 28 August 2019. The 2019 upload does not make them photographs of a 2019 ceremony. A President’s Day 2019 album contains 19 photographs, also uploaded on that date; the precise event day has not been established here. Club photo archive.
Similar care applies to the 1988 programme. The collection’s title identifies the event, while the image hosting path reflects later digitisation. A newspaper page can also have a later online date than the event it reports, as with the 1996 Lord’s retrospective.
What makes a photograph usable as evidence?
A useful record includes the original caption, photographer if known, approximate or exact date, venue and the basis for identifying people. A remembered name can be valuable, but it should remain a recollection until checked against another record. This archive does not identify people from faces alone.
The image’s factual value and the right to publish it are separate questions. A scan contributor is not necessarily the rights holder of every photograph reproduced on the scanned page. Newspaper credits can point towards the photographer or club, but do not by themselves grant permission to copy the image.
Scorebooks and printed records
An original scorebook can settle details that later summaries leave ambiguous: the exact day, batting order, bowling figures, partnership and not-out status. That is particularly valuable for Malik’s 403, where some repeated details conflict.
The current club sheets and the older Pitchero collections have different end dates. Their start-year headings should not be read as the foundation dates of the individual XIs. The records article preserves the scope and highlights the 1957 entry that falls outside a 1961 heading.
Further archive leads
Hertfordshire Archives’ accession Off Acc 1187 contains Langleybury School governors’ minutes for 1949–1996. These are a possible source for land and institutional context, not a confirmed cricket-club deposit. The Abbots Langley Local History Society is another route to local photographs and memories.
