Colts, junior cricket and the Development XI

Langleybury’s junior cricket history, from the 1988 Colts to Steven Finn’s early records and later age-group provision.

Junior cricket is visible throughout the recovered Langleybury record. It appears in the 1988 programme’s description of Colts teams and facilities, in the Development XI tables, and in players’ own memories of learning the game.

Colts in 1988

The July 1988 programme records Colts cricket at under-13 and under-15 levels. It also describes a wooden pavilion and all-weather strip in Far Field serving the third XI and Colts. These details show organised junior provision and facilities at that date; they do not identify when the junior section began. The contemporary club programme.

Youth cricket was included in the funding plans for the advertised Luther Blissett testimonial match. One third of the proposed profits was earmarked for pavilion furnishings and youth and third-XI development. The programme records an intention, without supplying final accounts. Steven Finn’s early cricket

Steven Finn told the ECB that he started playing for Langleybury at seven. In a separate interview he recalled his first proper match in whites, at about eight, on Radlett’s lower ground. These memories describe different steps in a child’s introduction to the game and need not conflict. ECB interview on club cricket; ECB first-match recollection.

The club’s awards record names him as fourth-XI Player of the Year in 2002. Its Development XI table records 5/19 against Roving Reporters in 2003 and 106 not out against West Herts in 2004. These are specific club achievements in both bowling and batting, preceding the professional career described in Finn’s profile. Fourth-XI award sheet; Development XI records.

Later age-group evidence

A historical description on the club documents page lists, for 2016, under-nine softball, under-ten hardball and under-11 to under-14 teams, plus a primary group for children under eight. The fact that this text remains on a live page does not turn it into a current team list. Club documents.

A Hertfordshire Cricket report records Langleybury as runners-up in under-ten hardball and under-ten incrediball competitions at an Ashurst Junior League finals day. It also records the club hosting an under-13A final between Radlett and Kings Langley. The report’s absolute year has not been securely established in the recovered material, so this archive does not assign it an unqualified year. County finals-day report.

Reading present-day information historically

The official website reviewed in November 2026 advertises All Stars and Dynamos for that season. Its age-group lists and totals are not entirely consistent across pages. For present membership, coaching or safeguarding arrangements, readers should therefore use the current club’s junior pages and contact the club directly. This archive does not accept registrations or run sessions. Official homepage; junior teams.

The historical record already demonstrates a sustained junior thread. A fuller year-by-year account would need team sheets, fixture cards, coaching records and labelled photographs, especially for the years between the surviving snapshots.
