Steven Finn: from Langleybury to England
Steven Finn’s own memories of Langleybury, his early club records and the documented route through West Herts and Middlesex to England.
Steven Finn’s connection with Langleybury begins with childhood cricket. In an ECB interview he said he started at the club at seven, and recalled joining in pre-season work at the ground. That first-person account gives the archive a view of club life beyond the scorecard. ECB interview, 1 April 2017.
First matches and early records
In another ECB interview Finn remembered his first proper match in whites, at about eight, on Radlett’s lower ground. Beginning at the club at seven and recalling that first formal match at eight describe different experiences, rather than a necessary contradiction. ECB interview, 12 May 2017.
The club’s own records preserve three later milestones:
| Year | Langleybury record |
|---|---|
| 2002 | Fourth-XI Player of the Year |
| 2003 | Development XI: 5/19 against Roving Reporters |
| 2004 | Development XI: 106 not out against West Herts |

England under-15 selection in 2004
A contemporary club notice dated 4 August 2004, headed International Honours for Langleybury Lad, announced Finn’s selection for the England under-15 squad after the Bunbury Festival. It described forthcoming matches and a two-week camp at Loughborough. The notice establishes the selection and plans; it does not prove every planned appearance took place. Archived club announcement.
The same notice said he had played for all the senior XIs over the previous two seasons and had twice been Colt of the Year. It placed his arrival at the club at eight, whereas Finn’s later first-person ECB account says seven. Both accounts establish the childhood connection; the differing remembered age is retained rather than forced into agreement.
The route into professional cricket
Middlesex’s official retirement tribute traces Finn’s progress from Langleybury to West Herts and the Middlesex Academy. Born in Watford on 4 April 1989, he represented Middlesex in 261 matches from 2005 to 2021 and was part of the club’s 2016 County Championship-winning side. Middlesex tribute.
His England Test debut came against Bangladesh at Chittagong on 12 March 2010. He played 36 Tests and took 125 wickets. He moved to Sussex for the 2022 season and retired in August 2023. These career facts place the early Langleybury records in context; this profile’s focus remains the documented club connection.
Remembering the club
In the 2017 ECB interview Finn said his father was a Langleybury vice-president and recalled helping with ground preparation as a child. He also described a planned return to help coach the first XI that weekend. That was an intention at the time of the interview, rather than evidence here of a completed visit. The current official club About page, checked in November 2026, lists Finn among its vice-presidents. Club About page. For the wider setting of his early cricket, see Colts, junior cricket and the Development XI.
