Alan Bunn (1922–2002): service to Langleybury

Alan Bunn’s early work for Langleybury, committee offices and life membership, reconstructed from the club’s archived notice of 30 April 2002.

Alan Bunn helped establish Langleybury in the early 1950s and served it in several administrative roles. An official club tribute, headed Alan Bunn: 1922–2002 and dated 30 April 2002, records his contribution. The notice survives in Internet Archive captures of this precise address.

The offices recorded in the tribute

The club’s account gives the following sequence:

Role Period recorded
Vice-captain The club’s early years; no dates specified
Secretary 1960–1964
Assistant treasurer 1969–1973
Chairman 1974–1978
Life membership Awarded in 1979

The tribute describes his continued support after his formal committee service and remembers him by the nickname “Bunny”. It also describes wartime service as a Spitfire pilot. That is the club’s account; this archive has not checked his military service record.

What the dates establish

The displayed date is the notice’s date, also given for his funeral. It does not establish the day of his death. The heading supplies the years 1922–2002 without giving a birth date.

Keeping those distinctions matters when using an obituary as evidence. An announcement can record several dates with different meanings: an event, a service, the writing of the notice and the later capture of the webpage. Here the earliest capture inspected is from 2003, although the notice itself is dated 2002. Readers should not use the capture year as the year of Bunn’s death.

The source’s broad reference to the early 1950s is also not a precise founding date. Read the history of the club for the competing accounts of its beginnings.

A recovered piece of the club archive

This is a newly written historical account, published on 2 November 2026. It preserves the subject and address of the earlier notice, while linking to the surviving source. The original wording and design have not been reproduced wholesale.

The office list is useful to anyone following the club’s organisation across its first decades. It can be compared with dated programmes, committee minutes and other records; it should not be expanded into a complete committee chronology without those documents. The archive guide explains the wider collection, and the sources guide explains how different kinds of evidence are treated.
