Langleybury in the National Village competition
Trace Langleybury’s documented National Village ties from 1972, including three established semi-finals and the long route towards the 1996 Lord’s final.
Long before the 1996 final, Langleybury was making repeated appearances in the later stages of the National Village competition. Fixture indexes, opposing clubs’ memories and the club’s own 1988 history together establish a substantial record, although they do not yet provide every result.
The early campaigns
The Hunton Bridge ground index records home ties in 1972 against Audley End on 7 May, Stansted Hall on 21 May and Essendon on 4 June. These are useful dated anchors. An indexed fixture establishes the listed pairing and stage, but without a completed scorecard it does not supply the result or explain how a side advanced. The sixth-round match against Isleham on 13 July 1975 has another kind of record: it was the subject of a segment in BBC One’s Going Places. The programme first aired on 5 August. The broadcast page separates the match date from the later television transmission.
Established later rounds, 1976–1986
| Season | Fixture or stage recovered | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 1976 | Quarter-final at home to Crockham Hill, 8 August | Hunton Bridge index |
| 1977 | Semi-final at Cookley, Lea Lane, 20 August | Competition index and Cookley memoir |
| 1979 | Quarter-final win over Linton Park, 5 August; semi-final at Ynysygerwn, 12 August | Competition index and Linton Park history |
| 1981 | Quarter-final at home to Longparish, 2 August | Hunton Bridge index |
| 1983 | Semi-final against Troon at Treslothan Road, 14 August | Troon match index |
| 1985 | Quarter-final at home to Rowledge, 4 August | Hunton Bridge index |
| 1986 | Quarter-final at home to Bledlow, 27 July | Hunton Bridge index |
The table combines the ground index, the 1977 competition list, the 1979 list and Troon’s competition record. It is a list of stages established by those sources, rather than a claim that every campaign ended at the last stage shown.
Cookley and Linton Park: views from the opposition
Cookley’s retrospective recalls its 1977 semi-final against Langleybury, including a rain postponement and threatening weather. Cookley advanced to the final. The personal recollection gives texture to an otherwise bare fixture record, while remaining a later account by a participant in the opposing club’s history. Cookley’s Memories ’77.
Linton Park remembers Langleybury’s one-wicket quarter-final victory in 1979, after defending 123. Its separate suggestion that Langleybury went on to become champions is inconsistent with the competition record: the following semi-final was at Ynysygerwn, which advanced to the final against East Bierley. The narrow victory can be retained without reproducing that error. Linton Park’s history; Linton Park’s records; 1979 competition index.
The five semi-finals claim
The 1988 programme states that Langleybury had reached five national semi-finals. The research has individually established 1977, 1979 and 1983, leaving two of the five unidentified. It would be misleading to convert the known quarter-final appearances into additional semi-finals merely to make the totals agree. The club’s 1988 account.
Towards Lord’s in 1996
Indexed home fixtures in 1996 include a regional semi-final against Hare Street and The Hormeads on 9 June, Audley End and Littlebury on 7 July, and Horndon-on-the-Hill on 21 July. A regional semi-final should not be confused with the national semi-final. Linton Park’s history also identifies Langleybury as its conqueror in that season, although the exact round is not established here. Ground match index; Linton Park history.
The next fully documented endpoint is the final against Caldy at Lord’s on 1 September 1996.
