When did Langleybury Cricket Club begin?

The evidence for 1950, 1952 and earlier cricket at Langleybury House, explained without merging conflicting accounts into an invented founding story.

The safest description is that Langleybury’s modern club history reaches back to the early 1950s, with earlier local cricket traditions. Two published club accounts give different founding years. The surviving research does not explain the discrepancy, and neither year should be presented as settled fact.

The 1952 account

The history printed in the programme for the advertised Luther Blissett testimonial match on 15 July 1988 is the earliest detailed account recovered for this archive. It places the formation or reformation of the present club in 1952. It also associates that year with a wooden pavilion on the then-current site, names Alan Bunn and Canon Martin among the early supporters, and says both became life members. Canon Martin is identified as rector of Langleybury Church. Read the programme history.

This is an important club source, but it was written more than three decades after the event it describes. Founding minutes, an original fixture card or a contemporary announcement would provide a firmer way to establish what happened in 1952.

The 1950 account

An official club page captured by the Internet Archive on 5 July 2015 says the club was formed in 1950 and describes 65 years of history. That accompanying anniversary makes 1950 more than a stray numeral. A Watford Observer report published on 6 January 2011 also gives 1950. Archived club account; 2011 local newspaper report.

The newspaper confirms that the 1950 version was in circulation before the 2015 capture. It does not provide a contemporary record from 1950, nor explain why the 1988 programme uses 1952.

Account What it establishes What it does not establish
1988 programme: 1952 The date used in an earlier club retrospective A surviving contemporary founding document
2011 newspaper and 2015 club page: 1950 A later, consistently repeated origin claim The relationship between 1950 and 1952
1865 tradition An older association between cricket and Langleybury House Continuous organisation, a particular match or use of the present ground

There is no basis for resolving the disagreement by asserting that the club was founded in 1950 and reformed in 1952. That would be an attractive explanation, but no inspected source supplies it.

Earlier cricket at Langleybury House

The 1988 history cautiously recalls cricket at Langleybury House in 1865. This is a tradition preserved by the club, not an inspected scorebook or newspaper report from that year. A March 2026 neighbourhood-plan appendix makes a separate claim of more than 175 years of cricket at the location, without giving the historical reference behind it. The two claims may concern different forms of estate or local cricket; their relationship remains unproved. 1988 history; 2026 planning appendix, LGS 16.

The eighteenth-century date of Langleybury House is not a date for the cricket club. Likewise, Abbots Langley Cricket Club is a different club. Its history must not be used to fill gaps in Langleybury’s story.

What could settle the question?

The most useful records would be founding or reformation minutes, early membership books, fixture lists, local press reports and dated photographs of the first pavilion. School governors’ minutes surviving at Hertfordshire Archives cover 1949–1996, under accession Off Acc 1187. They are school records and have not been shown to contain the club’s foundation, but may help explain land and institutional relationships. National Archives accession list.

The recovered tribute to Alan Bunn, originally dated 30 April 2002, adds a personal connection to those early years. It records his later work as secretary, assistant treasurer and chairman, and his election to life membership in 1979. It strengthens the record of who helped the club without resolving its precise founding year.

Until such evidence is found, keeping the competing accounts visible is the most accurate way to preserve the club’s beginnings.
