The club beyond the boundary
Langleybury’s social history: celebrity cricket, fundraising dinners, reunions, quizzes and community work documented across several decades.
The clubhouse and ground appear in the record as places for social events, fundraising and wider village activity as well as cricket. Contemporary reports allow particular occasions to be described without inventing an uninterrupted annual tradition.
Social life in the 1988 programme
The club history printed in July 1988 described football, darts and golf, occasional motor rallies and around 120 social members. It said the club usually opened six evenings a week throughout the year. This is a contemporary description of that period, not a statement of current opening hours. 1988 club history.
The programme advertised Luther Blissett’s testimonial cricket match for 15 July 1988 at 6 pm. It also advertised a sportsman’s dinner at Watford Town Hall for 3 November 1988, benefiting a scanner appeal and club development. The advertised dinner price was £16, with 6.30 for 7 pm printed as the timing. These are records of plans, rather than proof of attendance or final proceeds. Programme cover; dinner advertisement.
Celebrity cricket in 2010
A contemporary report records Watford’s celebrity XI beating Langleybury by three wickets on 16 July 2010, with 1.4 overs left after the hosts had made 112/5. Langleybury’s main scorers were Lee Channer 36, Ed Pearce 26 and Kevin Gallagher 25. Watford Observer match report.
The report names Luther Blissett, Alec Chamberlain, Steve Palmer, Ian Bolton, Jon Marks and Richard Walker among the visitors. Bolton hit the winning runs. Unlike the 1988 programme’s proposed selection pools, this is a report of a completed match.
Fundraising dinners and lunches
The Friends of Langleybury Cricket Club’s 26th Sportsman Dinner, reported in November 2012, took place at the Watford Hilton and supported Michael Sobell House and junior cricket. The report names Ian Robertson and Josh Daniels as speakers and Roger Dakin as master of ceremonies. Its numbering should not be used to calculate an inaugural year without checking whether an event took place every year. 2012 dinner report.
In November 2024, sponsor CPC Finance reported that a Langleybury Sportsman Charity Lunch raised £11,500 for SpecialEffect, the disability gaming charity. That is the event sponsor’s reported figure. CPC Finance event account.
The women’s cricket history records another strand of fundraising, including the 2013 Dale Butler memorial match and its reported interim total.
Reunions and quizzes
In June 2013, 57 former Langleybury School pupils from the 1978–83 cohort reunited at the old school grounds and cricket club. Former headteacher Roger Hennah attended. The report documents a connection through a particular reunion; it does not make the school and club the same institution. Reunion report.
On 25 March 2023, Eddie Gunning organised the club’s first hosting of an OQL UK Individual Quiz Championships event. Anne Hegerty and Beth Webster attended. The report describes a 90-minute individual quiz followed by a team quiz, with Hegerty first at the venue and 50th nationally. Contemporary quiz report.
A place for the wider community
The July/August 2024 Kings Langley Village News reports that Alex Riddick and the club opened the clubhouse for rest and refreshments during a June canal clean-up. The wider project covered about four miles from Frogmore Paper Mill to Hunton Bridge and removed around 1.5 tonnes of rubbish. The club’s documented contribution was hospitality; it should not be credited with carrying out the whole clean-up itself. Village News, issue 39, page 10.
The archived 2015 club website also records the affiliated midweek Langleybury Old Contemptibles, with Wednesday home matches. Its exact founding date and relationship to the main club remain to be established. Archived club website.
These snapshots show several ways the club fitted into local life. They remain distinct events, each with its own source, participants and date.
